Immersive Navigation for Google Maps
About
The biggest update to Google Maps navigation in over a decade. 3D driving powered by Gemini models analyzing Street View and aerial imagery.
Role
Lead Designer on Navigation — defined how 3D cartography serves drivers in critical moments across mobile, CarPlay, Android Auto, and cars with Google built-in.
Context
Google Maps platform team. Shipped March 2026 across all surfaces. Billions of navigation sessions globally.
Immersive Navigation transforms the Google Maps driving experience with a vivid 3D view — highlighting lanes, crosswalks, traffic lights, and stop signs to help drivers navigate confidently.
01
The Design Challenge
How do you make a 3D map useful at 65mph? Traditional 2D maps flatten the world — overpasses look like intersections, lane splits are ambiguous. We needed a 3D system that resolves these ambiguities while remaining glanceable at speed.
02
3D Cartography for Critical Moments
Smart zooms pull back on straightaways for context, then push in tight at decision points. Buildings go transparent when they occlude your turn. Lane guidance shows exactly which lane you need with smooth transitions.
03
User Research at Speed
Eye-tracking revealed drivers glance at the map for 0.5–1.5 seconds. Every element had to communicate within that window. Too much detail creates overload, too little creates uncertainty.
04
Reducing Missed Turns
Enhanced lane details show exactly which lane you need well in advance. The blue route threads through lane markers, while crosswalks, lights, and signs build a mental model of each intersection before you reach it.
05
Arrival & the Last Mile
The arrival sequence lights up your building, highlights the entrance, shows parking lots, and reminds you to save your spot. For complex destinations, guidance continues with walking directions to your final point.
